a look inside
It is not a blog. It is not just a page for a resume. This is my site to show what all I can do, what my skills are, and how these skills and my experiences are connectged. It really doubles as a resume and portfolio ssite, one highlighting my communications work in freelance writing and blogging, as well as photography, along with social science research, most of it involving civic engagement. It also includes documents linked to my work as a collegiate instructor in political sciece and urban and local politics and policy, which are a sort of techical writing.
Taken as a whole, the new site represents a sort-of rebranding. Before the economic downturn in the United States began, in 2008, I had worked as a collegiate instructor in political science. I specialized in urban government and policy, an interest that helped bring me to post-Katrina New Orleans in 2006. Previously, my most substantial work experience had been with print media, mostly with newspapers. Even while in graduate school, I continued to work for business and public affairs-oriented weeklies in the Deep South.
However, I have more recently found myself doing more strictly communications oriented work more often, but this time via the Internet. I also built photography-related websites including Cosmic Ray’s Photos. Moreover, I am the primary contributor to the blog of the non-profit New Orleans Photo Alliance and the associated PhotoNOLA.
To me, this diversity seems natural and interrelated, although affected by the economic tides and the evolution of communications technology. What I think has remained a constant in my work is that I have always had the aim of helping people make sense of the world around them, or to see it in new and fresh ways. What has changed in more recent years is that I honed my critical thinking skills to a fine edge through academic and research work. Meanwhile, I have been involved in Internet content creation for at least a decade, in the classroom as well as online media sites.
If you are interested in learning more about my work, or would like to work with me in any professional capacity, please write to me via "contact" on the menu above. In the interim, take a look around, for there is plenty of information about me and some of my work to check out. Thank you for visiting!
The glasses are mine, for the record. I took the shot.
